The first picture you meet in "Mutter- und Koselieder" is "Feelings of a Mother contemplating her Firstborn Child" (A 18). The picture is built up like an icon. The mother is sitting with her child on her lap. The form of the picture is triangular, and the triangular form is pointed out by the three stars4) above her head. The triangle is a symbol of the Holy Trinity. The verse that belongs to this picture tells you that "faith, hope and love" shine from the baby to its mother.

In icons, Virgin Mary often are painted with three stars, one on her forehead and one on each shoulder. The three stars allude to her virginity before, during and after the birth of Christ.
